In the world of healthcare, it's not every day that you come across a professional who not only possesses exceptional expertise but also a passion for what they do. Dr. Katy's story is a testament to the profound impact one individual can have on the lives of many. Read on to uncover what sets her apart, and discover the remarkable qualities that make her an invaluable asset to her patients and the world of physical therapy as a whole.
What inspired you to become a physical therapist?
When I was a teenager, I was in an accident and required a series of surgeries on my arm. I was worried about what it would mean for my future in terms of function and participation in physical activities. I was lucky enough to find a physical therapist who understood my worries and expertly guided me through my struggle. My physical therapist addressed both the mental and physical challenges in the rehab process. When I eventually reached my goals, I knew I wanted to learn how to share those experiences and skills with others. The profession of physical therapy is a balance between medicine and an art of addressing the needs of the whole person in front you.
What sets your approach to physical therapy apart when it comes to helping moms regain their strength and wellness?
Being a mother to small children myself, I understand the unique set of challenges that we face, both physically and emotionally. I bring that perspective into every interaction with my patients. I understand that mothers often have very little bandwidth for taking care of themselves. I teach moms how to incorporate a focus on strengthening their bodies and mindset on personal wellness within their daily routines.
Another key aspect of my practice is collaboration. I work closely with other professionals such as nutritionists and mental health specialists to ensure an integrated approach to recovery. I aim to help pregnant and postpartum women regain physical strength but also thrive in their overall wellbeing.
Is there a specific piece of advice or encouragement you'd like to offer to moms who might be hesitant to seek physical therapy services?
Invest in yourself. So much of our time as moms is used in service to our children, our families and our communities. We would never consider delaying the medical care our children might need. We should prioritize ourselves in the same way. I know that I am a better mother when I am taking care of my own mental, physical and emotional well being.
What do you enjoy most about being a physical therapist?
One of the best things about being a physical therapist, especially working with pregnant and postpartum women, is the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on someone’s life. Helping my patients regain strength, mobility and confidence in their bodies can be incredibly rewarding. It’s not just about addressing physical issues; it’s about empowering my patients to take control of their health and learning that their bodies are resilient. Every day brings new challenges and opportunities to learn from our patients which keeps my days exciting and fulfilling.
